The Department of Agriculture Assin Fosu Municipal with the kind support of the MAG secretariat organized bar soap training for thirty (30) women farmers at Obryoko community. The number of participants targeted was thirty (30), however, forty-three (43) participants took part in the training. The objective of the training is to provide alternative source of livelihood for women farmers especially during the dry season, in order to earn a living and improve standard of living.
Participants were advised to adhere to the following safety precautions during the preparation of soap.
- Caustic soda should never be inhaled or consumed; it can be fatal if swallowed
- Lye should be prepared in a well-ventilated area
- Avoid using aluminum bowls and pots in soap preparation
- Wear long sleeve and thick gloves
- Wear goggles to protect the eye
- Wear mask or respirator
- Chemicals should be kept away from children
Only three major ingredients were used in the soap making, they include:
- Water
- Lye (caustic soda)
- Oil
The lye was fermented for three days and the 3:1 ratio of lye and water was used for the process.
Participants took video of the training that was organized. Participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity and assured the Department to utilize the skills gained.
